A sector benchmark built from interviews and survey data across electricity transmission and distribution, and NESO.
AI Maturity in UK Electricity Networks
Every electricity network operator is working with AI; fewer can say where AI projects actually stand, what's stalling progress internally, or how they compare with peers working under the same regulatory constraints. This report answers that using data from operators across the UK electricity system, not vendor commentary or generic industry predictions.
We're researching key challenges, approaches and outcomes across the sector.
Current state, what's live and what's still sitting in a slide deck
Planned investment, including Ofgem-approved AI spend
Data foundations, the unglamorous prerequisite most programmes underestimate
Business change and workforce readiness
Engineering rigour and deployment standards
Every participating organisation is placed on the Deliberate AI Maturity Framework, a five-stage model scored across four dimensions, deployment, data, people, and engineering. The output is a profile showing where organisations are advancing, and where they’re held back.
Findings are drawn from structured interviews with Directors and Heads of across data, engineering, regulatory, and strategy functions, alongside a sector-wide survey open to operational and technical teams. All responses are anonymised and collated to look at sector-wide trends, successes and challenges.
